McKinney parks and trails, by the city's own numbers
The City of McKinney maintains 80 miles of hike-and-bike trails and almost 3,000 acres of parks and open space [S1]. Below are three parks of more than 200 acres each — Towne Lake, Bonnie Wenk and Erwin [S2][S4][S5] — and Erwin is closed for a renovation of about a year [S5]. Every figure below comes from the city's own pages.
The system in two numbers
The city's Parks & Recreation Department manages McKinney's parks and hike-and-bike trails: 80 trail miles and almost 3,000 acres of parks and open space [S1]. Parks are open 5:30 a.m. to 11 p.m.; Erwin Park keeps shorter hours, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. [S1]. The city says park acquisition, design and construction are funded by a mix of developer contributions, grants, McKinney Development Corporation money and bond elections, and it publishes a 2023 Hike and Bike Trail Master Plan [S1]. In 2019, voters approved $91 million for the parks system [S6]. The McKinney city profile carries the verified population, market and commute figures to weigh alongside the parks.
Towne Lake Park: the trail hub
Towne Lake Park, at 1405 Wilson Creek Parkway, covers 229.77 acres [S2]. Its 1.1-mile loop connects to the Wilson Creek Trail, a 5.3-mile regional trail the city lists as a National Recreation Trail [S2][S3]. The park also has a playground, sand volleyball, horseshoe courts, pavilions, a disc golf course and the Recreation Center at Towne Lake [S2]. Kayaking on the pond is allowed except during flooding or closures, and app-based kayak rentals cost $3 to unlock plus $3 every 30 minutes (renters must be 18 or older) [S2]. A dog park and play zone for Towne Lake is in design [S6].
Bonnie Wenk Park: the family anchor
Bonnie Wenk Park, at 2996 Virginia Parkway, covers 216 acres [S4]. The city lists a dog park, five playground structures with inclusive and all-abilities play elements, a zipline, an amphitheater, lacrosse fields, multi-use practice fields, a fishing pond and a free outdoor fitness court for ages 14 and up [S4]. Its trails are short loops — a 1-mile outer loop and a 0.39-mile pond loop — plus a 1-mile stretch of the Wilson Creek Trail [S4]. The park has no reservable features; its one pavilion is first come, first served [S4].
Erwin Park: the trail system's wild side, closed for now
Erwin Park, at 4300 County Road 1006, covers 212 acres and is built for mountain biking and camping: an 11-mile mountain bike trail maintained by the Dallas Off-Road Bicycle Association, a 1-mile natural-surface trail, a progressive skills course and tent camping [S5]. It is closed for renovations expected to last about a year, and the closure covers the entire park, including the trails [S5]. The city's project list says construction was expected to begin in summer 2026 and includes a new overlook tower, a 10-foot-wide concrete trail inside the park road loop, new restrooms (one with showers), new pavilions with power and campsites with water and electric service [S6]. Check the park page for the reopening before planning a ride [S5].
Weighing McKinney against its neighbors
Parks are one input, not the decision. For the city-level trade, the comparisons put McKinney beside its neighbors on verified population, market and commute data: Allen vs McKinney (Allen's trail network is covered in the Allen parks guide), Frisco vs McKinney and McKinney vs Prosper. For the commute itself, the US 75 corridor guide covers the highway through McKinney.
